1. Why Use a Ledger Hardware Wallet?

A Ledger hardware wallet is designed to keep your cryptocurrency safe by storing private keys offline, inside a secure chip. This means even if your computer or phone is compromised, your funds remain protected. Unlike software wallets, Ledger ensures your private keys never leave the device. All transactions must be physically confirmed on the device’s screen, protecting you from remote hacking and phishing attempts.

Important: Ledger never asks for your recovery phrase or PIN online. Be cautious of scams that imitate official Ledger websites.

2. Buy Your Ledger from Official Sources

To ensure authenticity, always buy from the official Ledger store or an authorized reseller. Third-party marketplaces may carry tampered or compromised devices. When your package arrives:

• Inspect the box and verify the tamper-evident seals are intact.
• Ensure the USB cable, recovery sheet, and instructions are included.
• Check for the Ledger holographic seal and branding consistency.

If you notice any irregularities, stop and contact Ledger Support before plugging in your device.

3. Install Ledger Live — The Official App

Ledger Live is the official companion app that connects your hardware wallet to your computer or smartphone. You’ll use it to initialize your device, manage accounts, install apps for different blockchains, and track your portfolio.

1. Visit ledger.com/start directly in your browser.
2. Download Ledger Live for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android.
3. Install the app and launch it. Do not download Ledger Live from third-party sites or ads.

Ledger Live is your secure portal for crypto management — never use unofficial apps or clones.

4. Set Up Your Device

Once Ledger Live is installed, connect your device and follow the on-screen instructions. The app and device will guide you through the initialization process:

1. Connect your Ledger device via USB (or Bluetooth for Ledger Nano X).
2. Select Set up as new device.
3. Use the device buttons to create a secure PIN code.
4. Write down your 24-word recovery phrase carefully on the provided sheet.
5. Confirm your recovery phrase on the device to verify accuracy.

Never share or type your recovery phrase online. This phrase is the only way to restore your funds if the device is lost or damaged.

5. Secure Your Recovery Phrase

The recovery phrase is the master key to your crypto. It can restore your wallet on any compatible Ledger device. Proper handling is crucial:

• Keep it offline — never store it in a photo, file, or cloud service.
• Use a fireproof and waterproof medium, like a metal backup plate.
• Store multiple copies in separate, secure locations.

Consider performing a recovery test on a spare device to ensure your phrase was written correctly before storing large sums.

6. Install Blockchain Apps

Ledger supports multiple cryptocurrencies through dedicated blockchain apps. To install them:

1. Open Ledger Live and go to Manager.
2. Unlock your device and allow Ledger Live to access it.
3. Find and install the apps for your desired cryptocurrencies (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana).

You can uninstall and reinstall blockchain apps anytime without affecting your crypto — your assets remain tied to your recovery phrase.

7. Add Accounts to Ledger Live

After installing blockchain apps, add your accounts:

1. In Ledger Live, select Add account.
2. Choose the crypto asset (e.g., Bitcoin) and connect your device.
3. Ledger Live will generate addresses and synchronize your account.

You can manage multiple accounts for the same crypto — ideal for organizing funds between trading, long-term holding, and payments.

8. Receive and Send Crypto Securely

Receiving

1. Select the account and click Receive in Ledger Live.
2. Verify the receive address on your Ledger device screen — it must match the one shown in the app.
3. Share this verified address with the sender or exchange.

Sending

1. Click Send in Ledger Live and enter the recipient address and amount.
2. Ledger Live sends the unsigned transaction to your device.
3. Verify the address and amount on your Ledger device screen, then confirm physically.

Always verify on-device — it’s the only screen malware can’t fake.

9. Update Firmware and Stay Secure

Ledger regularly releases firmware updates that improve performance and security. To update safely:

• Open Ledger Live and check the Manager tab for updates.
• Only update through Ledger Live — avoid external files or links.
• Keep the device connected until the update is complete.

Firmware updates never erase your funds. However, always ensure your recovery phrase is accessible before updating.

10. Best Security Practices

• Only use Ledger Live from the official Ledger website.
• Never share your 24-word recovery phrase or PIN with anyone.
• Always verify addresses and transaction details on your device’s screen.
• Keep your operating system and Ledger Live updated.
• Be cautious of phishing attempts or unsolicited messages about your wallet.
• For large holdings, consider multisignature setups or multiple devices.

Security is ongoing. Regularly review your setup to maintain control and safety of your assets.

11. Troubleshooting and Support

If you encounter issues, visit the official Ledger Support Center. There you can find help for:

• Device connection problems
• Firmware or app errors
• Lost PIN recovery
• Account synchronization

Ledger Support will never ask for your recovery phrase. If anyone requests it, it’s a scam — report it immediately.
